The simple white shirt can be the most versatile piece of clothing in your “mandrobe” if you know what to do with it. So let’s talk a bit about the ways you can wear it.

  • Casual

The way to look your best when going out for a movie with friends, for example. This should not be understood as sloppy, though. Just put on your favorite jeans, a pair of sneakers and a white shirt, untucked, with the top button opened and sleeves rolled up and you have your casual look.

  • Smart Casual

It’s all about layering. So to rock the white shirt in a smart casual way, you tuck your shirt in and add a jacket, a cardigan or a v-neck jumper. You can keep the sneakers or replace them with a pair of derby shoes and voila – you have yourself a great outfit for a lunch date, for example. This look is perfectly acceptable for a work setting too.

  • Business Casualbusiness casual

The business casual is a smart casual look with a tie and a pair of leather shoes like derby shoes or brogues, essentially. But more professional. This is a good choice if you work in an office with a more relaxed dress code. Go for grey or navy tones next to the white shirt.

  • Professional

Nothing says “professional” like a navy suit with a white shirt. Put a solid color tie in the mix and you have yourself the perfect outfit for a more conservative office setting. And remember to match the belt color to the shoes.

  • Formal

Also called a black tie, this is the modern gentleman’s attire for a wedding or gala. Black  is the best color used here. This attire is rarely used outside a formal event. And that’s too bad, really. Oscar Wilde said it best: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated”.

So there you go. Now you know how powerful the beautiful white shirt can be. And one last thing – loose the short sleeve button-up shirt, even if it’s white. It’s a no-no in a gentleman’s wardrobe.
